The United Medical Interpreter Association (UMIA) is an independent professional advocacy organization dedicated to protecting the interests of medical interpreters and strengthening the profession.
Medical interpreters play an essential role in healthcare, helping patients and healthcare professionals communicate accurately across language barriers during some of the most important and sensitive moments in a patient's life. UMIA advocates for the recognition, working conditions, and respect that this responsibility deserves.
Our mission is to promote fair compensation, strong professional standards, responsible industry practices, transparency, and accountability throughout the medical interpreting field. We believe that protecting interpreters and protecting patients are closely connected: qualified, properly vetted, well-trained professionals contribute directly to patient safety, accurate communication, confidentiality, and meaningful language access.
